Re: Matt Maher's Kyrie
While I agree that "eleison" has a different emphasis from "mercy," I think we need to remember that the actual word we have is "mercy" and it will colour the way it is set to music - unless one is going for a deliberate GCSE fail style of contrast.

Re: Matt Maher's Kyrie
Surely the words acclaim the Lord and implore His mercy, the music is just meant to make the meaning more obvious. It is still a piece of perfectly good liturgy if the words are said. Bit of a non-sequitur in the context of the discussion so far? The issue isn't whether you sing the Kyrie or not, b...

Re: Matt Maher's Kyrie
This thread is so reassuring. Perhaps it's something to do with one of the new national feasts. Now that the Emperor's nephew has been seen to be short on clothing, might the more immediate family be subject to similar scrutiny? Hello NT! I started this thread because I came accross what, in my vie...

Re: Amazing local experience....
I wonder if part of the reason for congregational harmony is that they have been singing these hymns from childhood, and maybe it only happens in a limited number of old favourites. It also happens to some extent in our parish too .... Silent Night often goes into parts (and even follows me when I c...

Re: Teaching the new Mass settings (including MacMillan)
One reason that songs are 'ironed-out' is that many parish musicians either cannot read music or read it well enough to recognised that there is a difference between what's on the page and what they are singing. This is not wholly off-topic as many need to hear a new setting before teaching it to o...

Can I add my good wishes too. You all do a wonderful job in making the meanings more real to people.

Re: Papal Visit
What place does that hymn have at Mass? Or at all, given this sentiment
Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good—except God alone.
Surely the days of blinkered adulation are gone?

Re: Lord Jesus, think on me
I have always sung O God our help and Lord Jesus think on me without the minims. Something to do with hymnbooks I'm sure. A couple of random thoughts ...... I wonder why the same thing wasn't done to Old 100th. I thought gathering notes were the first note of each verse, not each line. Anyone heard ...

Re: What if we just said, 'wait'
The flaw in the petition is in the assumption that any notice will be taken of it. "-ing into the wind" comes to mind.
As an aside, are other major languages being subjected to this barabarity? Or is just English?

Re: Unity with Liturgical Diversity
Surely once baptised/received as a catholic, you are a member of the church, not of a particular section/rite/diocese? Parts of this stuff reads as though these parishes will be like quasi religious orders with signed up members, and a controlled list. What is to prevent an old style catholic worshi...

Re: Unity with Liturgical Diversity
I wonder if it should be seen as an attempt to bolster the number of conservatives in the catholic church. It could perhaps be seen in conjunction with the loosening up over the extraordinary form, and the talks with SSPX.

Re: Unity with Liturgical Diversity
Well there are several areas where Anglican discipline around marriage etc seems to differ from Catholic. Anglican clergy have a certain leeway when it comes to blessing marriages where one/both party is divorced. One assumes this leeway will no longer apply. What will happen if a parish that "...
