Returning to the question of the vigil mass, is the congregation drawn by the fact that it is a vigil mass, or is the liturgy particularly family friendly? Might there be some future in making the vigil mass a meditative low mass, and making the day mass family centric (procession to the manger, ch...

Oopsorganist said In our parish this is always the big Christmas Mass with lots of children and families present. Am I missing something here............ Midnight Mass has poor attendance and Christmas morning is very very thinly attended. This is the case in our parish too, we have a 5.30pm kids M...

Is it because when it comes to Christmas we've never grown up and still want to do what pretend we're kids? This is a great collection of words, but doesn't seem to have quite made it into a sentence! Is it because when it comes to Christmas we've never grown up and still want to pretend we're kids...

To quote GIRM This invocation [Agnus Dei] accompanies the fraction and, for this reason, may be repeated as many times as necessary until the rite has reached its conclusion, the last time ending with the words dona nobis pacem (grant us peace). (GIRM 2005 #83) The prime function of the Agnus Dei is...

It's What Child Is This? and it's not from Wild Goose at all. It's by William C. Dix and we found it in Journeysongs which is an OCP publication. God's Surprise is in one of the Wild Goose collections though. Its definitely in Hymns Old and New and I think its in Laudate too. Oops, you say you're s...

Positioning of the musicians

Well since Organist suggested it here goes! What was missing Tsume was the procession by the choir with the ministers into and out of church. This gives the choir a greater feeling of involvement and participation. At least most of the choir can see the altar - at St Anne's cathedral, Leeds the choi...

Re: Excuse me, Cardinal...

...but didn't plainchant itself originate in popular singing, or even in folk song? And wasn't it chosen for church use precisely because it was popular music that people could understand and sing? There is a chant heard at Sheffield United's ground that goes "come on you Bla-ades". For those not f...

Re: Mass is . . . and regarding music . . .

When they want entertainment, they know where to go -- parish hall... I don't know what Arinze's parish hall is like, but that's certainly not where I go for entertainment! Last 'entertainment' we had in our parish hall was a beetle drive, I didn't go- couldn't get my sheep dog to herd ladybirds!

Gregorian music is the Church's precious heritage,"

True, but if we concentrate solely on polishing our antiques while ignoring our contemporary material we will rapidly become a museum not a church.

If three other 'Amens' have been sung to the missal tone Amen, the Great Amen fails to be great if it is also sung to that tune. That makes it the 'just the same as any other' Amen.

Now where might this have happened recently...?

Countdown

I often wonder how people think we pick the music for a Sunday Mass (a process that take me about an hour per Mass, with both SSG and Decani planners). Is it "we haven't had that one for a while" (this is the preferred method in some parishes) or the "Countdown technique" with the box of hymn number...

Look at the Words!

Sometimes it strikes me that a hymn has a life of its own, which is independent of its lyrics. For the first time in a very long while I went to morning prayer this Saturday. There were 4 of us, me and three old ladies in hats (as Merseysider would describe them) who informed me that they began on S...

what does this tell us

I guess what this indicates is a need for, as Presbyter has said in another thread, formation formation formation! I wouldn't knock our teachers one bit, especially as I'm the only member of my family who isn't a teacher. Its an incredibly tough job with lots of pressure and for a Catholic school to...

recognising the ministry

I agree wholeheartedly. but you are more progressive than around here. We commission extraordinary ministers of communion (as apparently we're now supposed to call them) as they begin their ministry, but its never renewed. We don't commission any other minister at all. This seems to imply a hierarch...
