Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

I don't think there's anything hard & fast about this. My own approach is that the liturgy of Holy Week and Easter Sunday is grounded in the events of the Passion. Our Lord was nailed to the cross on Good Friday; the veneration of a cross with the figure of Christ on it represents this to us, in...

Re: Exsultet

A handsome-looking score, Gradually (and a well-put together and interesting website, btw). I find it much easier to read than a version with modern notation or hybrid (stemless notes). I didn't spot anything on first reading, and will comment again if subsequent examination uncovers anything. Thanks.

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

Without wishing to criticise particular custom, I would have thought that Good Friday, of all days, would be the day on which veneration of Christ on the Cross would be appropriate.

Re: Replacing Mass Propers with Hymns at Mass

Sorry about the quote mark-up, Alan - comes of making comments from the train towards the end of a long day (over a quarter bottle of St. Michael's best Chilean Sauvignon Blanc).

This is very interesting and has much to commend it. Unfortunately the setting puts the stress on the second syllable of "ischyros". It should be on the first syllable.

Valid point. No sooner made than done (see original link). Thanks, SC.

Re: Replacing Mass Propers with Hymns at Mass

I believe the problem with that argument, Thomas, is that the tail wags the dog. It turns the means of participation into an end in itself, and in doing so goes against the grain of what the liturgy is: the received means by which the faith is transmitted from generation to generation. Its complex w...

Re: Crux Fidelis?

Please accept my apologies, Phil - SC's original criticism was certain, damning and notably unspecific. Yours wasn't and I should have given it the attention it deserved. There is, as you note, a structural issue. I've managed Part I of the Reproaches and it's nip and tuck on Part II. I think I have...

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

Is the showing of the Cross on Good Friday still a threefold affair? The instructions here seem to suggest that it isn't. I haven't seen the Roman Missal and don't want to mention this in the parish if there's no change. Two forms: (1) Threefold, gradual unveiling (para 15, page 362), or (2) Proces...

Re: Crux Fidelis?

Forgive me for breaking in on the critical unanimity, but I see nothing dreadful about the Missal "Faithful Cross", particularly in the context of a Catholic musical culture that trots out nauseatingly mawkish and incompetent doggerel week in, week out (I speak both of words & music). ...

Re: hymn tune

You could try this page - the hymn is at the bottom the the page, with a link to an mp3 file. I'm not in a position to transcribe it at the moment, but you will doubtless be able to do that yourself. I hope this helps you avoid the boom box!

Short of buying proprietary PDF editing tools, the following free tools are useful when you need to extract parts of PDF documents to include in other documents. nb these are Microsoft-based tools – I’m sure there will be equivalents for the Mac. There are also other tools out there - these happen t...
