It did refer to Birmingham. I wasn't implying criticism, just trying to emphasise the difference between us and the C of E., to show that it's not really surprising that many of our cathedral MDs are not home grown. Presbyter's post does bring home the way cathedral and parish music are linked thoug...

Catholic Musicians - Training and Formation

Kind of a refugee from the quires thread... No one has yet mentioned - so I will - another underlying problem: the fact that many musicians working in Catholic cathedrals do not in fact understand all this because - wait for it - they actually aren't Catholic. The problem underlying this is that the...

That being said, you cannot simply use music today that was designed for a totally different kind of liturgy. It doesn't fit. Yes and no. Almost all of the music written before the Council can be used on some occasions, much of it can (and, per posts passim ad nauseam, should) be used on many occas...

My copy has 31. The Gloria is an ancient hymn in which the Church, assembled in the Holy Spirit, praises and entreats the Father and the Lamb. It is sung by the congregation, or by the congregation alternately with the choir, or by the choir alone. If not sung, it is to be recited either by all toge...

Many CofE cathedrals have taken on the role of house of music, with excellent performances. If it were done at a time outside the liturgy, the choir need suffer no interruptions of the performance. During liturgies, on the other hand, the choir might want to join or lead the people in singing to Go...

Re: Logical?

Yes, but (what I imagine to be) the thought behind sid's comment still applies, unless the person who drafted the litany deliberately chose an illogical structure. The structure we impose on the world around us reveals the way we view it, and without getting at all wound up about the fact that Men S...

So works like this can't be confined to the concert hall. Why not? The alternative seems to transform churches into concert halls during the liturgy. As cathedrals do, so parishes long to do. Stop me if you've heard this one before, but. . 114. The treasure of sacred music is to be preserved and fo...

for pages, yes. But if this thread has occasionally seemed a little short tempered, it's good to see that - showing a fine sense of priorities - the record for number of posts is held by Late Arrivals at.. :D

Re: choirs v congregations

ps - please someone tell me how this quote thing works! I mess it up everytime!! Easiest way is to start by clicking the quote button in the post you want to quote - don't click "Post Reply". This brings the whole of that post into a post-a-reply screen, within [qwote] .... [/qwote] delimiters and ...

The text is here: http://www.the-orb.net/encyclop/religion/hagiography/psalter/pshome.htm It's in an HTML table, 1 row per verse, Latin and English columns. You can't copy only the Latin column, but if you copy both and paste into Word, you can then select the Latin column. It's not as such a public...

fair point, but equally, the clergy are supposed to know what they're doing, no? this is why we pay for them to spend seven years in Rome

Without wishing to sound like a politician on Today, I'm not sure that's a very helpful question. Let´s set some context. Chapter VI of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy leaves no room for doubt that music is an integral part of the Liturgy, and doesn´t by any means insist that all present sh...

Mysteries of Faith

A bit outside the scope of this forum, so hoping not to be banned.. the following letter appeared in the Times this week - just wondered what people thought about it? The letters page has been discussing the churchgoing of one T.Blair, and the letter she referred to was stressing the importance of n...

but what are the choir if not a part of the people? should the same apply to the readers? does the fact that they stand up at the front distract people? I'm not familiar with the situation at this particular cathedral, in fact I honestly don't know which one we're talking about. But I'm struggling t...
