Re: Responsorial Psalm

This thread is not the place to discuss inadequacies of sound systems and/or readers, but we need to ask why the people have any text in their hands, beyond that of the psalm response. Agreed. I was intensely irritated on Sunday 14th of this month. The readings for The Exaltation Of The Cross are n...

The "O" Antiphons

Can anyone please point me in the direction of where to find the music for the plainchant "O" Antiphons - modern or plainchant notation? A free download would be good! (mcb seems to be an expert at sniffing out such things...... !)

thanks in anticipation...............

Re: Choir Location

Do you have organ or instrumental accompaniment?

Where will accompanist(s) be?

Will you lose valuable congregation seating?

We considered this, but the building is small and seating downstairs is limited and the choir would be too far from the organist.

Re: Catholic variations

But there's one error that Catholic congregations don't seem to make, that drives our colleagues in other denominations mad, and that's on the antepenultimate note in Abbotts Leigh , which as written is the tonic, making the last 3 notes doh re doh. A lot of CofE congregations sing mi re doh. OK, i...

Catholic variations

And I do believe Sweet Sacrament Divine has appeared in at least one non-catholic hymnal. Yes, it's in Common Praise , the latest incarnation of Hymns Ancient and Modern (and a very good hymnal). I've played it at a few Anglican Eucharists. It made quite a nice change to be able to play it with the...

Re: Hymn book BearTraps

Welcome to the forum, Kingfisher! There are a couple in HO&N where the key signature is wrong in the melody edition. Wouldn't surprise me. There are also numerous instances in Laudate and probably elsewhere as well of the guitar chords being wrong unless you use a capo, which is not explicitly ...

Re: Romana Guardini's great mistake

Even more odd if they were having Communion on a Sunday afternoon if there had been Mass in the morning. I'm pretty sure it is not permitted to have a separate Communion service on a day when there is also Mass. It is certainly not permitted to receive at a Communion Service if one has received at ...

Re: Organists and communion

So you go to another Mass when you can concentrate? The way we are going, you will be lucky to be somewhere where there is more than one Mass. We used to have an organist who felt like that, but, apart from the fact that family life would make two Sunday Masses for Mum a bit difficult, I have alway...

Re: Organists and communion

If it were physically possible for me to get to communion I probably wouldn't anyway, as i do not feel that, having been playing the organ and directing the choir, my mind has been totally on the spiritual/devotional side of the mass.

Re: Not sure about all this 'traditionalism'.

I suggest that a small amount of plainsong has its uses. It is relatively simple, dignified music which can help to balance a parishes music programme and, were it widely adopted, it would give a little uniformity which would make visitors feel a little more at home. I thouroghly agree. In addition...

Re: Hymn book BearTraps

I remember a certain Holy Thursday Mass when an errant alter server put up on the board: 429 (Oh sinner man where ya gonna run to) instead of 439 (Pange Lingua) This was for the procession to the altar of repose. The organist (not me) fortunately stuck to plan A and dignity was preserved. I usually...

Re: Not sure about all this 'traditionalism'.

An excellent post. If I may reflect on it - Para 1) There is the danger of imagining a golden age when all was exquisitely performes plainsong and Palestrina. That was very rare because there alway has been a shortage of organists and singers with more than the most rudimentary skills. Anyone remem...
