Re: balance of output

Look forward to seeing those Presbyter. I write quite a lot but just small scale stuff. Psalms, single movements from the Ordinary, a few organ pieces. One of my pieces received a favourable reception lat year at Summer School. Most for the choir but with an eye to the congregation, though I did wri...

Re: Christ has died

No, the Sun would probably have the priest say "Gotcha" as he puts the consecrated elements back on the altar.

Re: Jazz music in church

Theology doesn't come into it ..... its a purely cultural thing. I presume you mean that theology is not a parameter of the style of church music. Fair enough. But music used in or as worship must be theological because it is addressing God: its texts consist of 'logia tou theou' (sayings of God) o...

Re: Jazz music in church

Duje Ellington once said that there are only two kinds of music - good and bad. If a piece of jazz is good and crafted in a way to aid worship there is no reason why it should not be used in church. Bob Chilcott's setting of the Latin text of the Mass in a jazz style is a good example. And the motet...

Re: Those things one can't do without

Lead us Heavenly Father, lead us? Lovely flattened 7th in the second (or third, depending how the music is laid out) line - and you can have wonderful time with the punctuation at the end of verse 3 - "thus provided, pardoned, guided..." - welcome to Rubato City!

Re: Those things one can't do without

And Alan Rees's Where is love and loving kindness on Maundy Thursday. And Taizés Stay with me at the altar of repose. Yes, Alan's Where is Love is quite special. Many years ago when he was Abbot I used to stay at Belmont about once every two months as I was at that time thinking of signing on the d...

Chris Walker's Veni Sancte Spiritus and Alan Rees' A Song for Pentecost are two must-haves for me.

Re: Those things one can't do without

'My Soul is Sad' for Maundy Thursday. After all, when else could you sing it? Gareth, see the Truduum thread - Gwyn uses it for the strippping of the altar, as do we, as, I believe, does the Belmont Abbey parish choir. My only caveat is the I am Your God statement, a claim which Jesus never explici...

Re: Kicking off the Triduum

I am hoping to use Martin Barry's If there is this love which he presented at the Summer School - though if not for the entrance song certainly for use during the foot washing. I ordered our copies on Tuesday so hope they will be available for tomorrow's choir rehearsal. Hithero I have bowed to cust...

Some repetitions that have been turned down, but which will be appealed against: Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts. Blessed, blessed, blessed, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna, hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest. And some that have been a...
