Re: Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!
And we should have recorded it. I would have bought it to hear again. Technology is not my thing. But, er, there are techno people in the society. Sale of a CD would have generated maybe £800 or so and twould pay for itself if we got some recording equipment. And there is a market for a CD which is...

Re: Biographical Details for Geoffrey Boulton Smith
I succeeded Geoffrey as Secretary of the Society's Composers' Group (which had been my introduction to SSG). He was a composer who knew what he wanted. In the face of our best efforts to suggest 'improvements' to his music, he would invariably listen politely, and invariably change nothing

Re: Happy Advent
You are quite correct on both counts, JW (it's worse than I thought!). The E in the choral bass at the end of the response should indeed be a G, and the A in the organ part should be a G, following the voice part.
I congratulate your cantor on her discernment.

Re: Happy Advent
Psalm: Alan Smith's setting in Veni Emmanuel (Organ) There's a misprint in this psalm in Veni Emmanuel : the third left-hand chord in the psalm tone should be a full triad on the G (spaced G-B-D) and not just the G alone. The piece may also be found ( sans misprint) in Psalm Songs (volume 1, page 7...

Re: PANEL decisions
The McCrimmon supplement was available on Wednesday.... I hear that the Laudate full music supplement, having been out of print, is once again available. It appears to have its own quote of misprints, in the tradition of its "mother book". I suspect that all the publishers have been worki...

Re: First Mass in new translation: so how was it?
At Holy Redeemer Pershore this morning, Fr John, who has been gradually introducing the new translation since Easter, started by drawing everyone's attention to the CTS Mass cards. By now, most people have got the hang of "and with your spirit" thoughout Mass. Today, we said the Confieor f...

Re: Published settings
There are two through-composed settings of the Gloria in Glory to God (Decani): A Parish Mass by Peter Jones and my Mass of St Kenelm. Fr Peter's setting will shortly appear in the Laudate supplement, and I believe that Decani plans to issue both of them separately in due course.

Re: Congratulations to Alan re Edinburgh
No-one could accuse the musicians at St John's of laziness: after Saturday's lengthy concert, they sang matins, Eucharist and evensong on Sunday, with new and challenging music at all of them. I was thrilled to hear my Te Deum sung and played so well and it was also great to meet and talk with the c...

Re: Congratulations to Alan re Edinburgh
Thank you, both! I'm in Edinburgh right now, and I will let you know how it goes. Their annual concert last night was very fine: very good amateur choir, first-rate professional director, excellent orchestra (for the Rutter Magnificat). It bodes well. St John's is a city centre landmark and a design...

Re: Summer School
This was our first Summer School after a seven year break and we enjoyed it very much. As Marty Haugen said, the sense of community was very strong and especially welcoming to newcomers (and returners!). The small team worked exceptionally hard in the face of some real difficulties and delivered a S...

Re: ICEL moving the copyright goal posts?
... For example: the arranger of For all the Saints/ Sine Nomine for the Papal Mass at Cofton Park was made to swear (metaphorically) on his grandmother's Grave and all that is holy - that he did not hold the copyright of his arrangement; that the copyright was held by the Trustees of the estate of...

Re: New/Revised Mass Settings - Across the Pond
And thank you , Hare, for your very gracious post. (Please do not leave on my account - I'd had a bad day at work and was grumpy, and I shouldn't have been posting at all!) Back on-topic (but relevant to the above): I have just returned from a very useful training day in Leeds on the new translation...

Re: New/Revised Mass Settings - Across the Pond
Oh dear. I thought this was going to be a day for composers, not some general kind of thing. The published agenda looks fine to me. Please don't water it down just so as to attract large numbers of people. Time enough for the formation of parish musicians when we have produced some stuff for them t...

Re: New/Revised Mass Settings - Across the Pond
I am also aware of new through-settings of the Gloria by Alan Smith and Peter Jones that will be offered for assessment at the seminar for composers on 19th March and yes, Stephen Dean has indeed been busy. So the day WOULD have been of use to me after all! And I've cancelled now! Oh dear. I though...

I too have composed some very odd psalm settings over the years.
