Re: Preparation of the Gifts

Just wish the collection didn't happen at this point – that seems to wreck everything. I think there is an ambiguity of language about this part of the liturgy - it masquerades under the terms "offertory", "presentation of the gifts" and "preparation of the gifts", all...

Re: Corpus Christi - the sequence

We always do the Sequence for Corpus Christi. The translation we use begins: "Behold the bread of angels sent / for pilgrims in their banishment." It works well to the tune JESU DULCIS MEMORIA, although one of the verses has an extra line, so we repeat the last line of the tune.

Re: All things to all people?

While you may disagree, I think we're actually on similar wavelengths. Music, whatever the style, must fit the ritual, and there is room for a diversity of styles in the same liturgy. The rainbow analogy is a good one. The key to incorporating diversity is sensitivity - sensing which pieces of diffe...

Re: Parish Liturgy and Music Internship

Of course, I suspect cost of living, which may be a bit higher than in the UK, is probably factored in, as well as the fact that to train liturgical musicians to a satisfactory standard is both lengthy and costly. The reality is that most parishes in Ireland rely on voluntary musicians, which leads ...

Re: All things to all people?

Divide the rite into its inherent sections. So, one type/style/idiom of music for the introductory rites, another for the Liturgy of the Word, a third for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, another for the Communion Rite, and another for the concluding rites. In other words, doing it systematically. Sur...

Re: Parish Liturgy and Music Internship

I echo the above remarks: the salary does seem a bit low, considering that 7 hours work split between two churches is probably not the full extent of the hours required to carry out this particular job satisfactorily. I note another position on the same website as an "internship": similar ...

Re: All things to all people?

I think that too often church musicians can be locked into style. Choirs that have the luxury of numbers that allow them to sing four or more parts can focus too much on Renaissance choral music and be dismissive of more contemporary, assembly-based liturgical music. Directors who work with young pe...

It is very much my hope to attend the Summer School; but (a) I am not yet a paid-up member of SSG, and (b) I am presently unemployed and the fees are not insignificant!!! The SSG's McElligott Fund may be able to help here. I would suggest that you contact the Summer School team (see the main SSG we...

Re: Liturgically Inappropriate Music

The subject of Psalms is interesting. As far as I am aware the normal way of chanting them in all traditions, including in synagogues, is to use an unchanging chant - though I do know that Anglicans sometimes use more than one for some psalms. The point is that the words don't actually need obvious...

Re: Maundy numbers

For the first year in a long while, we had a packed church at the Easter Vigil - around 800 people. Usually there is a noticeable difference between Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Vigil, but not so much this year. Perhaps people are beginning to see the connection between the three liturgies - o...

Very informative - the order is fascinating, but really clear. Any particular musical settings being used out there?

Re: Bishops fix date for ending old music settings

And there are a few parishes that have not changed their music settings, and say they will not change. Others have stopped singing altogether, which is one of the regrettable aspects of the revised translation of the Roman Missal. This is such a pity, on so many levels. When the majority of parishe...
