Re: Percussion

Yes I accept I am not a "prototypical" whatever that is! Actually there were quite a few elderly people there who commented on the same thing -too loud! Musicians need to remember that hearing aids can pick up too much and I include organists in that! I am certainly happy with added colour...

Oops

Visiting priest this morning announced he does not sing Sursum corda. No problem! I played the gradual hymn (in E flat) and was just going to start Celtic Alleluia in A when I heard "The Lord be with you" so no Alleluia. No apology either! A congreation member said how lovely the anthem at...

Re: Percussion

How interesting - where is that quote from please? I thought we greeted the Gospel with the Acclamation and the homily should follow naturally. AN instrumental to cover the procession with the Book makes more sense. :D

Music days

Final rant of the morning! It is sad that the Year of Mercy day at Hammersmith was cancelled. This is happening everywhere. Saturdays are now a day to support family activities and people can't even spare a morning for a session. Grandparents have to look after children. Many families are split so a...

How great thou art

Went to a fascinating ACTA day with Fr Gerry Hughes SJ (God of surprises). At one point we had an intense debate about the Atonement and people were agreeing that God did NOT send his Son to die for our sins in some sort of angry retribution. The day ended with a hymn and we all sang verse 3 "G...

Percussion

I went to St George's cathedral Southwark in my capacity as Provincial President of the Catenians Province 7 to promote our Bursary fund and ended up taking the collection! The cathedral was well filled for the HCPT 60th anniversary Mass. BUT the music group/singers were amplified and accompanied by...

Re: Laity squeezed out?

Westminster cathedral does provide text and notes for the Masses. The High Mass is of course choir orientated but at the other Masses the people are encouraged to sing by the cantor. Unfortunately a lot of the large congregation do not join in. One reason for this is that when in the congregation ev...

Re: Canon Peter Jones

That is sad news indeed. A wonderful person to meet and his music will live on! May he rest in peace.

Re: Noises off

Dear nazard, I tried putting up a polite notice pointing out that playing the organ requires complete concentration. It got taken down by the priest in charge but I think he did speak to the offenders privately i.e. the small choir. They seem to have been quiet since! This doesn't stop the same peop...

Re: Noises off

This is an increasing problem. One of the reasons for leaving my present post is inconsiderate behaviour while playing. The worst was laughter very near to me in the choir loft on Remembrance Sunday. I find playing on this day demanding as I remember all those who lost their lives and this was just ...

Saturday evening Masses

I wonder why so few Masses have any singing. At the most there might be a sung Alleluia with spoken verse and a sung Doxology. Some churches sing hymns unaccompanied by why no attempt at the simple chant Mass settings in the Missal? Recent horrors I have endured a recording of Silent night after com...
