Re: Corpus Christi - the sequence

We've never sung any of the sequences. But that's mostly to do with my lack of knowledge about why they're there. They do seem to break the flow of the Liturgy of the Word.

No, not complaining. Just wondering how some places get away with it.

Re: All things to all people?

I believe that if one selects items which truly reflect the rite (gathering, Gospel procession, communion procession etc) then the style/era becomes almost irrelevant. I stress, Almost.

Many will be in the same position: We're not very good at communication.

Sort of document which makes one feel like just doing something hippyish with fire and water!

Quite! Those cathedral MDs who understand liturgical music are very thin on the ground. Now, sadly, thinner!

Re: Teaching New Music.....

I believe it's all in the planning. If you work 3-5 months ahead, you can spot recurring themes and, therefore, recurring musical items!

Re: Renewal of Baptismal promises on Easter Day

Yes, agree about the musical choice, SC. Slightly different musical line-up this year. We've used the Taizé in the past and, several years, Schutte's River of Glory with the "Fountain of mercy..." verse.

Renewal of Baptismal promises on Easter Day

After today's homily, and in place of the Creed, we had the renewal of baptismal vows and sprinkling while singing Water of Life. It's something I thought many people did on Easter Sunday but recent discussions lead me to think this might not be the case. How common is this?

Re: Maundy numbers

This is probably a debate for elsewhere, JW. But I think we appear irrelevant to many. And we're not good at PR, let's be honest. We're only ever heard talking about sex: even the gay marriage debate was reduced to sex. Were I on the outside looking in, I'd think that the Church saw relationships as...

Seems odd to be posting here about someone I know and like. But for those of you who haven't seen today's Tablet, click here.

Re: Maundy numbers

Good Friday started with the smallest number I've ever seen. However, by the end of the psalm it was quite healthy, but still no more than 150 – and that's three-and-a-half former parishes merged into one!

Maundy numbers

I remember a discussion last year about numbers being down for The Mass of the Lord's Supper: And last night was an all-time low. When I joined the parish in 2004, the building was almost full on Maundy Thursday but numbers have decreased each year since. Last night, once the 12 had come forward to ...
