Re: New Prefect for CDWDS announced

Traditionalist is what they said of Romero before he showed different colours. People can change so I'll be patient and see how things work out.

Re: Leeds area new centre

Dear Dears

We need to remember that it is the Gospel, and not Pope Francis, which has always urged us to look outwards. Pope Francis is being faithful in articulating the call of the Gospel in an apposite way ... and curiously we are listening to him, whereas before ... who knows?

Animals

In my new life in Florida I've now met something I've only previously met on vicar of Finley ... The blessing of animals (as part of st Francis celebrations). Any suggestions for psalms and appropriate music?

Rumblings in Arundel & Brighton

I am sad to see reports of the resignation of +Kieran Conry. He had made a particular study of liturgy and I was gratified to find in him an ally when it came to the role of music and the assembly in post-Vatican 2 liturgy. I can remember him taking me to one side after the Mass to celebrate the 5th...

Farewell to uk (as we know it)

On Friday 19 September I leave uk for Florida and my new life as director of music for st Lawrence Tampa. I am really looking forward to working again after my post at Hallam was declared redundant at Easter. How united the kingdom will be when I return depends on the outcome of tonight's vote in Sc...

Peter Burke graces the Proms

It was good to see our member Peter Burke in his best bib and tucker placing a garland around the bust of Sir Henry Wood at tonight's Last Night of the Proms! Well done, Peter.

Re: The Great War

I was in St Marie's Cathedral in Sheffield and at its 1030 Sunday Mass with Bishop Ralph they also celebrated a Mass for the Dead. The music included John Bell's 'What shall we pray?, Abide with me, Russian Kyrie and plainsong ordinaries.

Re: Pope Francis moves to suppress liturgical abuses

It is good that here we have a more focussed consideration of just one area of abuse. Much better then the catalogue of abuses we were offered a few years ago. I think the action of the sign of peace almost presumes that we find ourselves sitting next to different people each week. Then the sign is ...

Re: Installation of new bishop for Hallam

The taste and see is by James Moore but quite why it was sung when there was only episcopal adoration going on defeats me!

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Hi all, I'm in Spain at the moment. I was speaking at a conference of sacred Musicians (!) in Guadix ... an amazing place ... oldest, poorest and smallest diocese in Spain. Great cathedral. The conference delegates were all bemoaning the poor state of church music in Spain. I wouldn't mind all the c...

Re: Long-standing music director axed as £1m debt forces cut

What a difference a week makes! I am delighted to inform you that the financial cloud which hovers over the cathedral parish of St Marie, Sheffield no longer hovers over me. On sunday 22 June I flew to Florida for an interview and on wednesday was offered employment as Director of Music at St Lawren...

Peter Jones wrote:What about some funeral hymns that canonise the deceased? Bell/Maule's Go silent friend springs to mind.

Welcome back, Peter, but isn't this a tad literal? Are we also to question being baptised 'priest, prophet and king' (or queen?) or is my brief escape to the USA making me too liberal?
