Re: Proms

By the way, did anyone else hear the Red Army choir singing 'It's a long way to Tipperary' on Radio 3 this morning?
Yes. It was delightful. 8)

"I enjoyed that"
Just a thought; would en-joy-ment be the subjective experience of Joy, a fruit of the Spirit? In which case I guess that it's no bad thing to feel it.

Re: Proms

That's fascinating JW. Thank you for a really informative post re. Wesley.

Hiromi's performance was simply stunning, it blew me away. What a gifted musician. What a skilled performer.

"§4. Within the limits of his competence, it belongs to the diocesan Bishop to lay down in the Church entrusted to his care, liturgical regulations which are binding on all."

Everybody run.

Re: Offertory hymns

"Angel voices ever singing round Thy throne of light"; now there's a cracker of a hymn for the Prep of the Gifts.

Active participation does not mean that every body must sing every thing.
Absolutely.

Beatification

Very reasonable coverage via EWTN of this morning's beatification celebration form Fatima. Commentators yabbering unnecessarily through musical items was relatively minimal (by USA standards that is). There were some lovely choral pieces; at one point the conductor left his rostrum and seemed to beh...

Re: Offertory hymns

Iirc, the tune known as Mozart by some, and Nottingham by others is part of the Kyrie from Mozart's Twelfth Mass.
I'm open to fraternal correction of course. :)

Re: Pentecost sequence.

There's a useful tune named Prompto Gentes Animo that can be found in the English Hymnal (1933 ed) where it's number 653. This tune fits perfectly. It's a tune that was used - maybe still is - by spikey Anglicans as a Kyrie Eleison. Ah! The tune's been shifted in The New English Hymnal (198* ed) to ...

Re: International Hymn Choices

Ahh, but they're thinking of the Pilgrim fathers at the time. Same words but a totally cultural baggage and implied meaning. Many of the US people singing the hymn would be horrified if they knew where it came from and drop it like a hot potato. So the different tune is kinda appropriate. A good po...

I love St Helen. Go for it B.F., it takes no time at all to teach it to the punters in the pews.

Re: International Hymn Choices

When watching Holy Mass from the EWTN chapel I'm often delighted to find that a dormant hymn has be revitalised by simply changing the tune to another like-metered one. The converse is true too of course, Faith of our Fathers sung to St Catherine doesn't cut the custard in the same way as the tune g...
