Re: Marty Haugen at Summer School

Good points mcb. The Motet is not intended for the vulgar who do not understand its finer points and derive no pleasure from hearing it: it is meant for educated people and those who look for refinement in art. Of the composers you mention, perhaps it would be interesting to ask them, "For whom...

Re: Marty Haugen at Summer School

I always enjoy Marty's workshops and find him to be a deeply spiritual person. Don't like every single piece he has ever written, nothing I hate but like some things better than other. I've been to a few of Marty's workshops too, over a few years. Agree with you SOP. I personally find the Mass of C...

Re: Published settings

"That's a good tune" But avant-garde composers don't do tunes. In fact they do their best to avoid them, or disrupt them. You mean the MacMillan MBJHN Gloria ? Please explain if you do. In what ways does its well-crafted and well thought out motivic structure inhibit, nay, "disrupt&q...

Re: Published settings

Oh yes. Thank you Alan for reminding me of these. I came across them first of all in 'performance' at the Society's Seminar for Composers in Hammersmith. The Belmont (Walker) and Psalitte (Collegeville Group) chant approaches are all well and good but can we not have a few more 'good tune' offerings...

I really dont care what the lyrics are but I think the song sounds cool.

I think that one conclusion we might draw from this thread is that a good tune does not save a poor text.

Yes. If Dufner had constructed a text praying that the Holy Spirit renews the Church, that would have been much better.

Re: The 'We are the Church' texts

In 1928, the year that Pius XI penned the document that would be the foundation of our Society in 1929, the Papal appeal for unity rings out loud and strong. But look at how it is expressed in terms of submission: 12. Let, therefore, the separated children draw nigh to the Apostolic See, set up in t...

Re: The 'We are the Church' texts

I got it right, then, I think! I thought you hadn't at first but you did "Who is she that stands...." arises out of this predominant Counter Reformation ecclesiology that persisted from 1588 until 1943... The one and true Church is the community of men brought together by the profession o...

Re: The 'We are the Church' texts

I hope it won't offend presbyter if I misquote him to make my point. Not at all CC. So who else has memories of being brought up with this? Who is still singing it? Who are the "we" that are the Church in this text? Who is She that stands triumphant Rock in strength upon the Rock, Like so...

Just in case we are discussing the WYD Liturgy and Music

Try the refrain Gloria (in Latin) about 50 minutes in........ and the Celtic Alleluia shows its global status as a Gospel Acclamation of choice.

Re: The 'We are the Church' texts

To continue the topic, what's the final verse of James Quinn's "Forth in the peace…" saying? What understanding of Church might you read into that? Is it espousing extreme, so-called 'traditionalist' views - a triumphalist Western Catholicism that says only Roman Catholics are members of t...

Re: The 'We are the Church' texts

The Australian Bishops have produced their list, as requested in LA.

At a quick glance, the Haugen and the Walker are included but not the Dufner.
