Re: Choral Director/National Schools Singing Programme - Arundel & Brighton

This is an encouraging development. I just hope that it does not suck the musical promise out of the parishes and into the cathedral. Something that supports both is what is needed. My experience of similar enterprises in the north of England was that everything initially became focused on the cathe...

Re: Presentation of the Lord

At my church they ignored the processional rites of the Church but decided to preempt the Feast of St Blaise with a blessing of throats after each Mass!!! The music followed the Feast however and included Bernadette Farrell's unpublished Presentation of the Lord verses for Christ be our Light. In th...

Re: And breathe......

I have the same irritation with the preface dialogues and a rude interruption by the celebrant of the people’s response. We rarely interrupt them (much as we might like to!)

Re: Wedding tourism

I have a wedding tomorrow of one of my cantors here in Florida. There will be 13 flower girls and11 bridesmaids and groomsmen. The processions start at 5pm but I wonder when the bride will arrive and I also wonder how many times I’ll have to play pachelbel’s Canon in D

Re: Litany Of The Saints at Easter Vigil

And just add to the usual concerns we did Easter Vigil (and Holy Thursday) bilingually which meant that the Litany had some challenges!

Re: Easter Vigil - when did you start and finish?

We started at 8.30pm and with 11 baptisms but only 3 readings/psalms we were done by 11.15pm. I was not a happy bunny to be playing the sunrise mass at 6am but I was delighted to be singing Joncas’ ‘As morning breaks’ as a post communion song just as the sun graced our worship.

Re: Notre Dame Paris

We have decided to sing Cochereau’s victimae paschali laudes (in English) as a recessional for the ‘choir mass’ each Sunday in Easter tide. Perhaps that’s what musicians can do: sing the music of Notre Dame while that cathedral is silent.

Re: Do you want a laugh?

I eat my words! St Marie's Cathedral in Sheffield appointed Robert Webb as organist/choirmaster for a period of 2 years. I knew him as a consumate and very popular musician. I append a biog from his website. Robert is a Sheffield based free-lance musician: Conductor, accompanist, arranger, composer ...

Re: Do you want a laugh?

There is a guy who has held fast to the organist post there for decades. He’s retiring from his post which was unpaid since the financial debacle which led to the post of director of music of diocese and cathedral being declared redundant at Easter 2014. The post is only for 2 years, I understand, a...
