Re: Pre-recorded music in liturgy

Unfortunately, since the pandemic, when choirs were silenced, we have seen an increase in pre-recorded music. One parish very close to home used Covid as an opportunity to axe its music ministry, replacing real people with recordings. When the assembly returns (on May 10), this will have been the no...

Composition Competition 2019

Composers are invited to submit a new setting of the hymn Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling , suitable for Pentecost or confirmations. The hymn can be for unison, SA, SSA, SAB, or SATB choir, and must include parts for congregation. The accompaniment may be piano and/or organ. Composers, if they wish, may...

Re: Music for Papal Mass in Phoenix Park, Dublin

In answer to Peter's point, Composers submitting settings of the Sanctus to the Panel for approval are required also to submit settings of all three Memorial Acclamations and the Great Amen to form a consistent set, with a recommendation that they be thematically linked, or at least in the same or ...

Re: Hymns for Confirmation?

Apologies for my lateness in joining this conversation. Here's the list of what our Schola sang at the confirmations in May 2018. There are 25 in the group, and we invite the congregation to join in. Sometimes they do. We always sing during the conferring of the sacrament on the candidates: there ar...

Re: Lectionary for Sunday - the Holy Family - yr B

Can't figure out how to upload attachments, but I can forward the setting of Psalm 104: He the Lord is Our God that we use to anyone who wants it... It's a simple refrain in A minor for assembly, with psalm tone verses for cantor.

Re: Pentecost sequence.

At risk of going off topic, has anyone any bright ideas for the Corpus Christi sequence?
We use the tune Jesu Dulcis Memoria, which works well with the "Behold the Bread of Angels sent" text. One of the verses has an extra line, so we repeat the last line of the tune.

Re: Pentecost sequence.

This is the one that we use in our parish. It moves along nicely.

Re: Carol Competition 2016

This announcement is coming a little late, but it's important that the work of some fine young composers is fully acknowledged: The task of this year’s competition was to write a carol for unison, SA or SSA choir, or for choir and congregation. Sixteen entries were received, and the judges had the...

Re: God so loved the world

Its a lovely thing, I agree. Are there any settings of that text for congregational use, I wonder. There are a couple of congregational settings that use the quote from John 3:16. These are the ones that come to mind, and the weblinks: For God so Loved the World, by Marty Haugen (http://www.giamusi...

Carol Competition 2016

Hi All, I'd be grateful if you could pass on the following news, which is of especial interest to young composers. Composers who are 21 years of age or under are invited to submit a new carol for Advent or Christmas, suitable for upper voices. The carol can be for unison, SA or SSA choir, or for cho...

Re: Musical accompaniment on Good Friday

True. Accompaniment also supports the voices, and gives an overall sense of harmonic shape to the piece that is otherwise missing in unaccompanied, melody-only singing. That said, and going back to the original post, Good Friday is a suitable occasion where the only music heard is unaccompanied sing...

Re: Musical accompaniment on Good Friday

We made the bold step some years back to keep the organ silent for Good Friday. Of course, this eliminates some very attractive pieces which are built around the accompaniment, but it is a sacrifice worth making. It reinforces the starkness of the day - stripped altars, no entrance hymns, everything...

Re: Liturgical Tourism

Is this a record? Probably not - most churches in Ireland, including cathedrals, will give the choir summer holidays of two or three months, with no provision for music during this time. Surely it would be very easy to sing a simple missal Alleluia, or Eucharistic Acclamations. In our own parish, w...

Re: The wickedness of face cream

I must confess that, many years ago, I produced an overhead slide for assembly with the words for a hymn. What I actually put up was, "You shall cross the barren dessert,"

Sweet!

Re: Music Animator required

Some of us have neither an organ, nor a place to put one. Guitars, instruments and keyboard are the order of the day. Granted, a pipe organ does take up a fair bit of room, albeit mostly vertically. A good digital organ takes up around four square metres, with speakers mounted on the wall, so unles...
