Re: Limited supply of Psalmists for the Easter Vigil

Years ago we used to sing 'Send forth your Spirit' to Dom Gregory Murray and 'I will sing to the Lord' to Boulton Smith, as a congregation rather than using a cantor, it worked very well.

Re: Help identifying a psalm setting

On the theme of Easter Vigil psalms, is the Boulton Smith setting of the Exodus psalm in the Mcrimmons psalm book?

I have found a recording of the Gregory Murray setting: https://www.rnz.co.nz/concert/programme ... -july-2018

Re: Help identifying a psalm setting

Has anyone used this setting for this psalm, either during the Easter Vigil or at Pentecost? This year we used a setting by Stephen Dean which is nice, though I prefer the Dom Gregory Murray setting. Just wondering if you are familiar with the original version of the Dean (not the one in The Great ...

Re: Rome issues Triduum instructions

It is a shame that the period from the 4th Sunday of Lent through to Pentecost and all the liturgies that come with it couldn't be moved to later in the year, in place of the Sundays of Ordinary Time.

Help identifying a psalm setting

Can I please ask if anyone knows this particular setting of Psalm 103 'Send forth your Spirit' and its composer? I've typed the notes below which translate to the melody of the refrain: Middle C Send A forth C your F Spi- E -rit, D O C Lord,..... A and C re- D -new C the A face G of A the F earth. A...

Re: St Chad's, Birmingham

A lot of credit to the excellent organist (Nigel Morris?) too; a magnificent voluntary at the end which I think was an improvisation of 'O God our help in ages past' (the recessional hymn) I wonder if he played the (misnamed) 'St Anne' Fugue by Bach? It's what Anthony usually played when we sang O ...

St Chad's, Birmingham

I attended Mass here today and have to say the organ sounds superb; it has recently had a mid-life refurbishment and an already impressive sounding instrument now sounds even better. There were some sounds which I've never heard from an organ before, despite regularly attending Salford Cathedral wit...

Re: Learning the organ

I'm having a go at learning to play the Gloria from the Psallite Mass, as I know it from the Cathedral and like it. (and on a separate point, looking at introducing it at my local parish church, to replace the Salazar setting we currently use.) Can I ask if I am playing the right chords here, in re...

Re: Learning the organ

Have to admit 'O Bread of Heaven' isn't one of my favourites, it somehow just came into my head! I do like a lot of the old Anglican hymns, but also quite fond of some of the stuff that came after the folky '70s era; things like the St Thomas More Group and Bob Hurd, Dan Feiton, John Bell, Michael ...

Re: Learning the organ

Thanks both. I don't think I'm quite at that point, mcb, but I can at least get a reasonable idea of how most of the psalm refrains will go by looking at the stave, before we start singing them! I particularly like your sanctus setting and 'Rejoice forever'. Thanks for the heads up about Anthony; I'...

Re: Learning the organ

I don't play any other instrument and whilst I don't sing in a choir, I have plenty of experience of singing in the church congregation; specifically at my local cathedral, which is renowned for its diverse approach to the music. This has definitely helped me to 'get the ear for it' and I can sing q...

Re: Learning the organ

Hello pdfsd, I would be interested to know if you played the tune of O Bread of Heaven from the notes in front of you, or simply by remembering what you have heard. Are you a young beginner, or a mature person who has not played an instrument before? It is never too late to start, and always worthw...
