Re: Lectionary for Sunday - the Holy Family - yr B

Very interesting, SC.(We'll be sticking with Mr Inwood's "O blessed are those" )which seems to fit both choices of first reading. Can't really see anyone singing "He, the Lord, is our God. He remembers his covenant for ever." Paul Inwood’s version with its compelling accompanime...

The continued use of "old translation" mass settings

Is this a Catholic Parish? In England and Wales? How do they get away with ignoring the norms for Mass laid down in G.I.R.M. and by the Bishops' Conference i.e. Peruvian Gloria, Israeli Mass, Memorial acclamation? Forward to the 1970s. This is a matter of great concern and annoyance to me. Why are ...

Re: Second Sunday of Advent

[How are you fitting the newly translated "when we eat this bread..." To St Columba?]

You are welcome to the one we use which I put together when the revised trans. Took place. We sing it in 4 parts.

Re: Organ nightmares

Not very long ago I was engaged to accompany an accomplished and well known mezzo soprano during a funeral Mass. The ancient wheezy organ is in the west gallery, and it meant that I was seated with my back to the assembly. The singer was positioned a few feet behind my back, looking down the nave. A...

Re: Organ nightmares

Sub-title 'Organist' Nightmare' I was engaged to play the organ for a wedding, a few days ago, at a church which was unfamiliar to me. The stand in priest was charming but difficult to follow because of his strong, Asian accent. Announcements and cues for hymns, were unintelligible and the whole aff...

Re: All things to all people?

Music/Folk groups are, I feel, best positioned at the front of the church to best engage and lead the congregation. If however they are in full view, it can be most distracting and sometimes makes it impossible to focus on the Mass itself. All those mysterious looking instruments and other electrica...

AARGH!...........The note redoubles!
Still wondering how M&Liturgy came across this instruction; they seem to be the only ones to have heard about it.

What anniversary of the Election of Francis???

Music & Liturgy, issue No 350 tells us that on June 29 we mark the anniversary of the Election of Pope Francis as directed by the Bishop's Conference. I have been unable to find this reported anywhere else, nor have I come across anyone who has even heard of it. I am mystified! :?:

Re: Psalm for the feast of the Transfiguration

I can recommend one from the GB-Smith "Responsorial Psalm Book for Sundays & Feast Days" (Collins). It is for the 7th Sun of Easter C. Music: Paul Johnstone. The words of verse 2 will need to be adapted but otherwise it is a straight sing. This setting gives a range of options and is j...

Re: Greener grass?

HLOEH appeared on the English scene in Praise the Lord (revised edition) in 1972, but although I was one of that book's co-editors I have no recollection as to what was the source of the words. Perhaps one of us had access to the Caswall collection of translations. It's a fine hymn with plenty of b...

Re: MASS FROM LEEDS.

By coincidence these were among my most favourite hymns during school days. 'Sweet Saviour Bless us' is such a beautiful hymn and In the days of Evening Benediction it was sung regularly. I have to confess that once a year we include it in our Mass, just because "a little bit of what you fancy....

Re: Congregational singing of hymns

I recently spent a month in Catholic Malta attending four Sunday Masses each in a different church where there were huge congregations. The music and singing was abysmal. Each assembly had two or three leading the singing, accompanied by organ or guitars. No one else sang. How these musicians manage...

Somehow this had escaped my notice, so thanks for pointing it out. I will take up your suggestion of using 'Grenoble'

Re: 24 June Birth of John The Baptist

20 years ago our church of St. J the B. celebrated its centenary. When planning the music I had difficulty finding a suitable hymn. I cannot remember where I got the words for the hymn we used, but I set it to the tune, ‘Old Hundredth’. I would have liked to use ‘Gonfalon Royal’ but the congregation...
