Re: technology and CDs and such.......

We use recorded music during the annual reconciliation mass as described above. It works well enough, but I don't see why we couldn't use real musicians, other than for the usual reasons that no-one is available from an already small musical core. In the church where I grew up it was normal to sing ...

Re: Youth Sunday 2008

I don't think it's really fair to comment on the resources without having tried them out, or at least shown them to a youth group to see what they think - they might be able to develop the ideas a bit, or just run with them. I sympathise with many of the views expressed here, but this is merely an a...

Re: presentation book for psalmists

...holds things up if the cantor remains at the ambo until the alleluia is finished....what are people's views on this? It might 'hold things up', or it might allow a moment for reflection, depending on your point of view. As a reader I get annoyed when priest/deacon can't wait a few seconds for th...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

Every translation of the bible/psalms is nothing more than a translation . We're simply not go8ng to be singing the original - ever. So - it's not the words that count, it's whether people's spirituality is fed. A degree of common sense is required here. Well my first para was a joke, tongue in che...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

This is an old chestnut. In the old days I would have strongly suggested to the catechist that s/he report me to the highest authority! These days I just say stick with what's written in the local missal because that way EVERYONE'S SINGING OFF THE SAME HYMNSHEET. It avoids confusion in their tiny br...

Re: Payment for organists

There was also the Payment? thread from 2004-5 (!) which discussed it at great length. The link that I posted at the end has been changed so here it is in its revised form - scroll down to the bit labelled "Professional Fees", tons of stuff there. http://www.ism.org/publications/info/ and ...

Re: Not sure about all this 'traditionalism'.

Sorry to be a dumbass, wot's a EF/OF mass? I just about never read blogs, can't believe it when so much notice is taken of them. I don't speak latin either. It would be good if everyone could have some latin that they could understand and pray in church, maybe 'the main bits', for global unity, but ...

Re: Inwood attacked again

No offence intended organist. I'm just amazed at the number of people who request I look at their weblog - which is after all, little more than a diary or journal for the IT age. Such things used to be private affairs for personal thoughts, and were often full of stuff which should never see the lig...

Re: A question of image

That's more or less where I'm coming from - no-one's mentioned anything about dumbing down because that isn't the issue. More significant is a name which means absolutely nothing to many, or suggests either a liberal or conservative group ethos (pertaining to music and liturgy in the church) dependi...

Re: A question of image

St Gregory does present an issue - the association with chant/plainsong - a somewhat ancient tradition, like it or not. Oddly enough I remember looking him up on the web to find out more about his musical past, and ended up reading an article very descriptive of his very mystical direct line to God ...

Re: Where do your old Paschal Candles go after Easter?

Epiphany is almost over, and with it goes the Christmas season. During this time, our Advent Candles have been either burned to a stump (Advent #1) or barely dented (Advent 4) and points in between (2 & 3). The Central 'Christ candle' has burned merrily since then, on its own. Don't know what ha...

You could try 'Sort Ascending' rather than 'Sort Descending', which puts the latest post at the top.

I quite like this new format; just let's steer clear of excessive Latin OK? :)
