Missa Virtute Magna

I've been singing Missa Virtute Magna (Clemens non papa) and know there are many settings, including Palestrina, which all use the same melodic line with its rising fifth start. I've tried looking for the original chant from which it came, but have come up short. Can anyone point me in the right dir...

Re: Instruments: Which and where?

VML, when I am leading the music group on the guitar and co-ordinating a couple of melody instruments whilst cantoring the psalm, I chose not to go to the ambo but to sing from the place where the music group is, which also allows for the guitar to be plugged into the amplifier. The responsorial psa...

Re: Managing a Liturgical Procession

You could try any of these ideas: ⋅ Sing the hymns/antiphons in unison. Dot the choir members at strategic points of the procession. They have a little more nouse about keeping in time and listening. They still process, but rather than being "the choir" are more integrated with t...

Re: Jazz music in church

Jazz is not native to Europe and the question is therefore whether or not it can be judged as an ethnic tradition and an ethnic tradition in the British Isles or as using instruments adaptable to sacred use or as in some way growing organically from pre-existing forms of sacred music or as a new ar...

CofE weddings to include baptism

This is on the BBC website this morning.

Anyone been asked to do something similar in their parishes? What would be your (pastoral) response?

Re: God has chosen me

…teenage sibling It would appear that is the age group that the site is aimed towards. Good for them. I'll have to ask my own teenagers what they think - mind you, they think that the Punk Priest is pretty cool, and I get asked, every time we're asked to play I the Lord of Sea and Sky , if we can d...

Re: Electronic hymn number display

One further thought: rather than spend the money on an electronic board, why not contact your local (Cathoilc) secondary school DT department and get them to make a wooden one with enough slots for your needs? This has the potential to be the basis of a GCSE woodwork project, helping both the studen...

Re: Electronic hymn number display

Hare, given that the ones that people have seen are from German-speaking sources, perhaps you need to Google "Liedanzeigen" maybe coupled with "Projektor" or "Leuchttafel"... eg this page From this site I quote: "Electronic song displays play an important part in m...

Re: Electronic hymn number display

No, Gwyn: it doesn't overcome Hare's need to have more than four numbers. Nor does it persude people to look at the board at times other than the four-hymn sandwich slots, so that they realise that they do have the words to the Latin in their hymnbook. No, what you need is a cute projector: like thi...

Baptisms en masse

From BBC News website about the Georgian Orthodox Church: The next baptism is scheduled for early April, when thousands of mums, dads and their children will cram into Tbilisi's biggest church, the Sameba Cathedral. The babies will be briefly dipped into a gigantic inflatable font after receiving a ...

Re: Veneration of the Saints

I have never been very comfortable with relics… The sense of unbroken continuity with those who have gone before us, both great and small, was very powerful and gave me a whole new perspective on this aspect of the communion of saints. Nor have I ever been comfortable with relics. However, it is in...

Re: Vidi Aquam

Or there's Forth in the dawn light by Pamela Yale, with the lines: “Go, work today, the flush of early morning Brightens the east, and day is coming on;" Back on topic: for the Easter Vigil, we use a setting of the Vidi Aquam from Plainsong for schools - not the usual setting, but an alternativ...
