Triduum
We have found our new parish. I offered to play for induction Mass. Christmas organ unusable because of leaks. Cantor did well and we joined in. I still think Missa de Angelis recording for a children's mass is crazy and in the end we only sang Gloria. The pp started by asking me to play at offertor...

Torture
One of the Masses we went to locally really was musical torture. At the start a recording of an organ playing This is the day - no singing. At communion a recording of an organ playing the same tune over and over again - it felt like 50 times! I would rather have silence if we are not going to sing!...

Re: Limited supply of Psalmists for the Easter Vigil
In a discussion forum a father mentioned "clericalism" from a parish choir member who resisted his daughter taking any part in the Vigil - she was back in the parish from university. I do think this can be a problem if we are not open to others coming in to help out. His daughter did sing ...

Feast day
I volunteered to play for the feast day at a local church which we have been attending :D The occasion was also the induction of the new parish priest who worked very hard to prepare for the day. The big surprise was that he had not looked at the Missal to see the set readings for the day. He chose ...

Re: Pre-recorded music in liturgy
At a wedding years ago the bride insisted on a recording of the Wedding March! The violinist of the string quartet said she had insulted me as it was perfectly obvious that I was very capable of playing the march. Keep music live! Go down the recorded route and eventually we will all be redundant!

Re: Extraordinary Rite News
I think a bigger worry is young priests coming out of seminaries wanting to take us backwards. They are not keen on interfaith and ecumenism. They seem to think they are right and everybody else is wrong! Very worrying!! In one case I heard the first Mass was OP - nobody knew that would happen. How ...

Being careful
We are looking forward to summer school for the first time for some years! We are both anxious about public transport in London and go by car if we have to go anywhere! Ironically the service at Westminster cathedral for the climate falls in the middle of summer school and it is ecumenical and only ...

Re: Communal Singing in Church
You are right to be unimpressed! Facebook is full of stories of organists resigning because of lack of any consulatation! So sad!

Return to Mass
I have been reading Stephen Bullivant's Catholicism in the time of Coronavirus and his earlier work Mass Exodus. The descriptions of liturgical experiment in the 1960s especially in USA are fascinating! What is your experience so far of people returning to Mass? I agree with Stephen that many will n...

"Choirs"
I am fed up being told our school has a "choir" when they have a karoake group who sing to CDs of pop music. Maybe so many kids are singing from meory because nobody teaches them how to read music? Proper posture and breathing are not taught. They might as well be singing in a bar - they a...

Re: Liturgical Tourism
Could not get to Mass in Bali. In Christchurch we attended the same church as before. Gather us in, Christ be our light, a singable local Mass setting using old words for Gloria! Creed is different too! The bishop preached well but he is unpopular as he wants to knock down the damaged historic cathe...
