Re: Advice needed...

I think I'm more anxious about how to begin to establish some trust with the new precentor and persuade him that (despite being female and a lay person) I do have at least half an idea of what I'm talking about regarding liturgy. Good luck with that one!!! Have you already met or is it just reputat...

Re: The disaster that is Christmas

This may be controversial but ... how many choirs stop singing Christmas music as soon as Christmas Day has gone? Liturgically the Christmas season begins then. I knew one church who kept their crib going until February 2nd and always explained why. We may complain Christmas is "celebrated"...

Re: Unity with Liturgical Diversity

Putting things very, very simply: are the current mal-contents in the Anglican Church going to come over and be mal-contents in the Roman Catholic church?

Given that, I would ask you to respect the integrity of those who think differently to you,

Re: question for mcb??

Can we go back to Armenian? I did try in Phoenician - which was near enough to the Greek to be guessed and looked up - but the forum would not accept the font All you have to do now mcb is find the appropriate website of organic artefacts (whose rank you have discerned) and go for a birth of a grec...

Re: Choir guidelines

I do hear what you are saying, but does that mean that anything should be tolerated, no matter how distracting? Would the same latitude apply if we were discussing a reader, or a eucharistic minister?

I am saying it should be handled sensitively, with respect and with charity.

Re: Music Workshops

I have been to these music 'workshops' in the past and have found them unsatisfying. Not my idea of a workshop. They are sometimes nothing more than a cosy chat with the composer who quickly, very quickly, take you through a few of their pieces but there is nothing taught. Personally, I would prefer...

Re: Haugen on tour

We are all entitled to our opinions and likes/dislikes. Perhaps the word 'hate' is too strong. Personally, I like his music although there are some pieces that leave me cold. I would not dream of abusing someone if they liked the pieces I don't. Bring on the mods. [Indeed. Two offensive posts have b...

Re: Choir guidelines

These last two responses are very good. Ask yourself: how will you wish to be treated when it is your turn? I recall a situation, not a choir member but another church helper, where the family were asked to have a word and suggest 'retirement' but that caused heartbreak and upset as the family knew ...

Re: Gospel procession

:?: Is this thread a wind-up? Is someone really advocating we discourage singing unless it is performed by trained singers?

Re: Gospel procession

I have seen this done in a way that made it natural. The "This is the Gospel ..." and the response "Praise to you ..." were sung followed by the Alleluia. Trying to remember if the actual Gospel was also sung but having a craft moment.

Re: Special ascii characters useful to musicians & liturgists

Go into Word, Insert, Symbols - find the symbol you want and the appropriate code is displayed toward the bottom of the box.

Tried to copy a screenshot but it will not copy. Tried to attach a document but the extension doc is not allowed.

In Word, 0101 followed by Alt+x - Lucinda Sans Unicode.

Re: Papal Visit, September 2010

Ah, thanks FT.

But it turned out that it was a truly pastoral visit as he tried to visit as many venues as he could. It sounds as if this visit would be more formal and political.
