Re: Formation for young singers

And, organist, I remember that when they were asked to 'choose the music' for their various confirmations, they were far more informed than the catechists! Lots of them went through in my Brownie Pack - when we went out carol singing they would (a) organise themselves and (b) throw in descants ad li...

Re: Amazing local experience....

I remember this from when I used to go to 'big' Sunday School in Castletown near Sunderland in the 60s. It can't have been every week, but I do remember in particular men and women singing different parts to 'All hail the power of Jesus' name': us singing 'Cro-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-wn' as the men ru...

Re: Rotation of Mass settings

At choir practice a few weeks back, someone suggested the acclamations they'd heard at a diocesan event - turned out to be the Gathering Mass - I started to sing it and they all joined in, no music, no words, off they went. Encouraged, I put it in for Advent (even though I think it's a bit long for ...

Ascension Day in Scotland

Simple query: Having unsuccessfully searched the Scottish Bishops' website for an Ordo I just want to know: are the Ascension and Corpus Christi still celebrated on Thursdays (ie not transferred to Sunday as in England and Wales), meaning that in Scotland people still hear the readings for the Seven...

Re: Swine flu

I was very unexpectedly attacked by a sneeze this morning as I was tidying up the hymnbooks; took the one most affected off to the sacristy to wipe it down - possibly the first time Liturgical Hymns Old and New has been suitable for something, as it has a plastic wipe-clean cover. But sharing hymnbo...

Re: Swine flu

geisha girl indeed. This 'Namaste' greeting with hands together and bow of the head - v.graceful; we used to use it quite a lot when I lived with international students and our chapel was choir-formation. And I don't think a handshake would have been appropriate for the lass in my choir yesterday, ...

Re: Am I being a pedantic bore ? (yes)

As it did on Sunday when I put in a thanksgiving-type Communion song and omitted a final hymn. I've explained why, verbally and in the bulletin, and explained we'll not be having a final hymn for a few weeks and so far no major twitching, but it will take some getting used to. However it 'feels' jus...

Re: Bet you never had this!

Some time last year I was in Canterbury Cathedral for a friend's degree assessment (MA, organ studies, I think). Well, it was brilliant, but boy, was it loud! As I sat there, feeling the vibrations through the wood of the choir stalls, I gazed upwards to the pipes in the triforium, then followed the...

Re: Peter Hooper OFM

I heard this morning that Peter Hooper, Friar Minor, liturgist, died peacefully on Friday 3 July. His funeral will be on Friday 10 July at Chilworth at 10am. O God, you are water for our thirst and manna in the desert. We praise you for Peter's life and bless your mercy that has brought his sufferin...

Peter Hooper OFM

Please remember Peter in your prayers - he is doing his dying this week, after a long illness. Some of you might remember him from Summer School, some from Franciscan parishes, some from being taught at Canterbury and other places. Remember his parents too.

Re: Bring flowers of the rarest

When importuned to put in Marian stuff at Mass I sometimes oblige with a song of praise based on the Magnificat. You'd be surprised at the number of people who humph and sniff at this option. Clearly it doesn't count!

Terrors of the Triduum

Well, I suppose I could resign, too, choir having totally gone astray during fourth psalm tonight (my fault, not enough rehearsal - an organist or even a midi file would have helped ). But if I did that, we'd probably go back to no sung psalms at all, and the Israeli Mass and I'd have to kill myself...

Re: Terrors of the Triduum

JD Crichton, in The Liturgy of Holy Week : 'The sense of the Communion of this day is given first by the prayer after communion and then by the blessing prayer that concludes the service. It is a paschal communion: God has restored us to life by 'the triumphant death and resurrection of Chris t', it...
