Psallite Mass "At the Table of the Lord"

At St Peter's in Cardiff we have been using this seting by the Collegeville Composers Group for a couple of months and it has ben received very favourably by choir congregation and clergy. It is a setting which contains simple music though of some beauty, and I think congratulations and thanks shoul...

Re: Letter in the Tablet

Alternatively, Fr Jones and also many others could take the other route - who was it that said "publish and be damned"? Let's hope it doesn't come to that though! :)

Re: New wine, old skins

.......attempt to retain a familair tune means that important clauses within, say, the Gloria, are sacrificed in favour of familiar material........ I know what you mean Mithras but not necessarily. I know of one composer who thinks that his re-write of a certain Gloria is better than the original....

New wine, old skins

I have had a chance now to look at some re-workings of previously well-known Mass settings which have been re-crafted to accomodate the new translatins, and, frankly, I am not sure we are going about this in the right way. The new translations have syntactical and therefore-word stress differences f...

Re: Luther and Music

Lutherans also have much more respect for their organists; on holiday in Denmark and Sweden a few years ago I attended a couple of Lutheran services (and got to play a couple of fine organs too); the custom was to have a "middle voluntary" between the gospel and sermon (not just a trackles...

Re: Mustering the parish for a project.

I'd be very interested to know what the musical priorities are which occupy your B of G, though I can guess. In my experience the schools attached to the parish are the least likely to support anything to do with organs, 4-part choirs, or indeed any music written prior to 1965, though such enthusias...

Re: Good Shepherd Sunday - World Day of Prayer for Vocations

On "vocations": two years ago to the day I responed, though was unpublished,* to an article in The Tablet as follows - "Has The Tablet adopted a definition of "vocation" narrower than what might be expected, given its progressive reputation? Last week we were told that ordin...

Re: The good loo guide

I trust that the concerns expressed in this thread will lead to increased attention being paid to the minutiae of episcopal enthronements.

The good loo guide

Since Musicus has locked the potentially helpful thread on comfort stations throughout the Archdiocese of Cardiff, now might be the time to open a new discussion on this topic, one which must surely speak to our most fundamental needs. Actually St Peter's is blessed with two - one by the Pieta chape...

Re: Triduum 2011 - Hope all goes well!

A number of interesting points here - there is a double sharp in the alto line of "O Come and Mourn" (at least in the setting I use, in E). More to the point, if it is questionable whether Communion should be distributed at the Good Friday Liturgy ( a most perceptive point which I had not ...

Re: Scrutiny Rites

We said the Creed And this makes pastoral sense since surely the mother in question would not be halfway through her journey towards baptism unless she already believed what the Creed enshrines, and that she was able to express this alongside her family (and the wider parish community of which she ...

Re: Those things one can't do without

All are welcome here. But I don't think SC was suggesting otherwise, to be fair. That I know -and I also know that SC was not implying anything other than that. My main point was that hymns not familiar to RC congregations could, and perhaps should, be brought into Catholic liturgies (provided they...
