Re: Abuse of the Extraordinary Form?

Some years ago Presbyter was kind enough to point me in the direction of a book on the liturgical reforms, from which I learned that there was a number of bishops in England and Wales who refused to allow the dialogue Mass in their dioceses - right through to the V2 reforms. It would seem that the s...

Re: "Child Friendliness"

In my experience, children and young people respect and respond to informed and inspiring leadership; they relish being challenged and they despise being patronised. Absolutely! I'm not sure that this is the forum for raising this - but, isn't it likely that the majority of those responsible for wo...

Re: "Child Friendliness"

If the children to whom you're supposed to be musically friendly are of secondary school age then my experience may be relevant. Despite my best efforts I have not been able to shake the Shiney Jesus song from the school's repertoire - but this is largely down to the fact that staff of a certain age...

Re: CCLI trying to make a fast buck?

CCLI send similar letters to schools at regular intervals - I narrowly avoided a well-meaning member of the admin team taking out said license and thereby wasting a tidy sum. Our Calamus is more than adequate, and we pay for Shine Jesus Shine and Be Still For the Presence as and when the need arises...

Re: Victorian Dad - New translations

Paul Inwood's quote from my local ordinary

Another bishop - not so local - would say that we should conform ourselves to the liturgy and not vice versa...but what do I know? Oremus.

Re: God's Spirit is in my heart

No need to declare an interest as it's fairly obvious from previous posts. Two things:- given that most of the hymns at Mass are replacements of scriptural texts this hymn at least has the benefit of being very profoundly scriptural - I'd ban the pious poetry and miscellaneous "gathering-y in b...

Re: Video Screens in Church - what do you make of this?

A screen is used in the Methodist Church at which I play and it bothers me not one jot - not least because they helpfully put the copyright details at the end of the last verse and I regularly mis-count verses! In a Catholic church I think screens would need to be very carefully placed so as not to ...

Re: What if we just said, 'wait'

Contrabordun: Am I really the only person to have heard objections to the 'obsequious tone' of the translations? The irony being that since the collects, for example, are couched in courtly language with its associated deference one would rather expect the translations to reflect the same. I had a p...

Re: What if we just said, 'wait'

One of the comments at the page cited by SC contributes this: Fr Chupungco was referring to 'the inability to fuse together the two basic concepts of Vatican II’s liturgical renewal, namely sound tradition and legitimate progress.' This is a man who respects both tradition and progress. His is a bal...

Re: Merry Christmas in Latin - help please!

Thank you gentlemen. Thanks also to Presbyter for his suggestion - but the only Latin we'll be singing at school this Christmas is the version of Reno erat Rodolphus that appeared here last year, perhaps the year before - it's acquired the force of immemorial custom with my form!

Merry Christmas in Latin - help please!

Some bright spark has decided that since our school is a language college we ought to be making multi-lingual "Merry Christmas posters (not me I hasten to add!). Anyway, the scientist in question got the ball rolling by putting Merry Christmas into some kind of translation contraption and askin...
