Re: Antiphons and hymns

Well, James Quinn started it off back in the 1970s with New Hymns for All Seasons, nearly all of which were his new texts to existing tunes; and people have been doing it ever since. I don't see it as a peculiarly RC thing to retain one text for one tune - not any more. However, I suspect that many...

Re: Antiphons and hymns

That's the word I had in mind. I can't think of any psalms or antiphons containing the words Thatcher or Daily Mail! I agree that I wouldn't want to use this every week as it would be doing "One hymn to the tune of another" too much. I'm using it for Christ the King but haven't decided ye...

I have heard a rumour about a Chant Day in Ashford, Kent, led by Nick Gale - anyone know about it? When etc?

Re: Lateran Basilica

Southwark's Ordo says "Remembrance Day: One Requiem Mass may be celebrated for the dead of the two World Wars.

We are doing this at our 10.30 Mass, with 2 mins silence and Last Post. That leaves 2 other Masses to celebrate the Feast

Re: Baptism at Mass

I keep meaning to get a hymn ready for these occasions .. would the Offertory Procession be a good time and what could be sung? What would others do or not do for such an occasion/opportunity. I've used Paul Inwood's "Water of new birth" (Ritual Moments collection) during the offertory, p...

Re: Lateran Basilica

I was rather surprised when our new pp told me today that we shall be having a Mass for the dead on this Feast and that the hymns must be Remembrance - type hymns. We have not usually done this and I wondered what happens in other places. Do we have to forget about the Lateran Basilica because of R...

Re: Lateran Basilica

Asb is quite correct about 1997. Time plays tricks doesn't it and I have further checked the score and I must have updated it in 2000 after we had used it chez moi a few times. We used it for the annual Dedication of the Cathedral Solemnity which eerily enough falls on 11 september. The words of th...

Re: Lateran Basilica

I was fortunate enough to be invited by Stephen Dean to write a setting of this psalm for a 2000 National Choirs Festival event at Southwark Cathedral. As I recall the organist decide not to play the 3rd verse and this left me feeling somewhat wanting more at the podium. In the coach journey back t...

Perhaps the can work more soberly together!

What a good job that the city of Condom in Tarn et Garonne ceased to be a bishopric in the 18th century.......

Re: presentation book for psalmists

Don't forget that GIRM says (para 61) The psamist, or the cantor of the Psalm, sings the Psalm from the ambo or another suitable place [my emphasis]. I thought we had had this discussion before: when is it appropriate for the cantor not to sing from the ambo? One answer can be 'when the ambo is on ...

Re: Lateran Basilica

In a few week's time we celebrate the dedication of the cathedral of Rome. In its wisdom the church has given us a veritable paragraph as a psalm response on that day. How are forum members dealing with making the sung response memorable at first hearing? Do you think the 1st Sunday of Advent (B) p...

Re: Christmas Day Dawn Mass

There is a setting by Gelineau (response by Carroll) in his "Lectionary Psalms" (Publ GIA available through Decani ISBN 0-941050-07-6) and one in John Schiavone's "A Lectionary Psalter" (publ OCP can;t see an ISBN). Both have the American response "A light will shine on us ...

Re: Christmas Day Dawn Mass

I used this last year, but it didn't go down very well I know its a nebulous thing, but any inkling why not? Not really sure; they have sung "harder" responses before. I put the "American" version of the response on the printed order of service, but I think most of the congregat...

I can do the second question, but not the first! I'll use { and } to represent [ and ], so the system will show the characters to type, not the results..
