Re: SSG Winter Assembly 15th November 2014 - Come and Sing!

I will be there (Friday and Saturday). Who else is going? I'm looking forward to the Crichton Lecture, and Martin Foster's workshop. And I'm reliably informed that there will be home made muffins and chocolate Mars Bar crispy cakes on offer with morning coffee. Not sure how well I'll be able to sing...

Re: Boosey and Hawkes

Maybe it's time to try something different? There are lots of new and revised settings that are available. I must confess that the St Anne's Mass has never really done it for me. We've been using Martin Barry's revised Spring Sanctus Acclamations for six months or so and the congregation has really ...

Re: Preparing for Lent and Easter 2012

As far back as I remember, we've used the first form in our parish and, as I'm in the same neck of the woods as Keitha, perhaps it is a geographical thing. I don't have a strong feeling either way. What bothers me more is the fact that we always use (and have always used) a cross, complete with corp...

Re: New texts - some practical points.

"may the Lord have mercy" demonstrates the infinitive; to mark "have" as the subjunctive form would have been incorrect. It's still not an infinitive! It's an optative with the syntactic form of a closed interrogative. (Look at page 944 of this book (or serach in it for Long may...

Re: The New Texts: Implementation without Accompaniment

The plaudits that have been showered on the new Psallite Mass confirm me in this opinion. It’s not incompetent, but the Gloria and Credo are inoffensively tedious......Frankly, if that’s the best we can do our standards aren’t that high. I wouldn't profess to know much about anything, but I do know...

Re: CD 'accompaniment' at Mass

Just to clarify, the CDs used were a musical accompaniment, rather than a sung version of the song. This made it more difficult to sing along to IMHO. It was almost too quiet to hear and, even when I strained and could hear, I wasn't sure where the intro ended until we were suddenly part way through...

CD 'accompaniment' at Mass

One Saturday a month, our parish Mass is billed as a school Mass. This means that the children lead the singing, are the lectors and lead the prayers. Until very recently, the music was led by an accomplished musician with a sound liturgical knowledge. She has fought valiantly to prioritise the sing...

Re: The trouble with Communion Processionals

[....I do not think it appropriate for the choir to troop up in procession after everyone else has received and is trying to be quiet, as that will be a major distraction. The only case where the choir can join on to the end of the Communion procession will be if they (and everyone else) are singin...

Re: The trouble with Communion Processionals

(I like going last much better than going first, and it allows us to establish the processional song before the procession gets going.) But I think it's possible to establish the processional song when the choir goes first. We get to sing the antiphon/refrain two or three times before we move and w...

Re: The trouble with Communion Processionals

it's still the Communion song which doesn't quite work for us. Perseverance is what is needed, I think. We've been using antiphons with psalms, and other songs with short refrains (and lots of verses!) to accompany the communion procession for a number of years now. We begin as soon as the Priest h...

Yay! We still have this too. It's actually known as the Yellow Gloria in our choir!

I digress, I know, before I'm told off. :D

Re: Niceblogs

Both Gabriel and mcb have hyperlinks to their own blogs on their member profiles, or at the bottom of any of their posts. They provide a music list for each Sunday (after the event, unfortunately) and those you mention often feature. I guess that makes them 'nice' blogs. :-)

Re: Teaching the new Mass settings (including MacMillan)

Why Rome seems to delight in making everything so complicated is beyond normal understanding. The cynic in me says that it's simply their way of saying " We're in charge". I expect that's it. Though I'd have far more respect for their authority if their actions weren't quite so flummoxing...

Re: Marty Haugen's Storrington Mass

Sorry to reply so late in the day to this! I have an idea (though I may be wrong) that this was one of the settings we looked at during 'An Evening with Marty Haugen' at Olton Friary a few months ago. There was definitely a setting using the new texts that was written for a parish somewhere in the U...
