Re: Missa Virtute Magna
I'm pretty certain Alan is right. In its early edition (published after Clement's death) it is said to be based upon a motet by Andreas de Silva (c1478-1530), who is thought to have been either Spanish or Portuguese. My bet would be that it is taken from 'Intonuit de Celo Dominus' ('the Lord thunder...

New Bishop for East Anglia
Bishop Alan Hopes, the fourth Bishop of East Anglia, has retired, and Pope Francis has appointed the Canon Peter Collins, a priest of the Archdiocese of Cardiff, as his successor. Bishop Alan has been the Chair of the Liturgy Committee of the Department for Life & Worship for many years, predati...

Re: The Sunday Obligation - it's returning
Good point. The Bishops issued a press release on 9th May - but I didn't notice much about it in the media. We have been working on email and personal contact systems over the last 2 years and have activated them. Then there's our schools, who in my neck of the woods have disseminated the informatio...

Re: Archbishop Roche and other new Cardinals
Thanks SC. I had heard of Cardinal Heard, but I thought that he was a Scotsman - I recollect news headlines around the time of his death claiming him for Scotland! I see, however, that he was ordained in England and served in an English diocese before being moved to the Curia.

Archbishop Roche and other new Cardinals
After todays Regina Caeli Pope Francis announced the creation of new Cardinals (to be created at a Consistory in August). As expected, Archbishop Arthur Roche was included in the list. I could be wrong, but I think that will be the first time there have been two voting English Cardinals since 1914 t...

Re: Communion Songs
I have to say that no-one has ever expected me to forego Communion - I suspect it's simply that on occasions it gets forgotten or something like what happened to SC happens. Many clergy have made efforts to ensure that I can go. My all time winner was when I was playing an 'away gig' and I jumped in...

Re: Communion Songs
I agree with SC - choirs descending stairs can be a noisy distraction, but at our place sound doesn't travel much from the spiral staircase, but we will be keeping an eye on it. Continuing the 'organist and Communion' reminiscing, on more than one occasion another organist has kindly swapped places ...

Cardiff & Menevia - Two Dioceses, one Bishop
Not strictly a matter of liturgy (yet!), but interesting to note that Bishop Mark O'Toole (Plymouth) has been appointed Archbishop of Cardiff (succeeding Archbishop Stack) and, at the same time, Bishop of Menevia (currently vacant) thus uniting the two dioceses " in persona Episcopi ". So ...

Re: Communion Songs
It's particularly difficult where, as at our church, the organ and cantors are on a 'West' gallery with a long spiral staircase. In the end, having tried all the options discussed here, we decided to continue the Communion Chant until we are as far advanced as possible then head down to receive Holy...

The new constitution for the Roman Curia - Praedicate Evangelium
On Saturday the new constitution for the Curia was promulgated. It comes into force in June and is being formally announced at a Vatican Press Conference this morning. It is currently only available in Italian, but here is an article in English, which gives us a bit of a flavour of the contents of P...
