Re: Come Back Again

Nowt wrong with consecutive 5ths. Ask Vaughan Williams. No, as long as they are used deliberately by people who know what they are doing. This composer, along with many others, didn't. It is acceptable to "disguise" consecutives by using secondary 7ths, 9ths, etc. This composer, along with many oth...

Re: Come Back Again

Interesting. A few comments for the composer, whoever he or she may be: (1) "forgive the sins of men" (end of the refrain). Inclusive language considerations mean you can't sing that these days. Difficult to find a good solution to this. "through his Church forgives our sins. Amen" is rather weak. I...

Re: Congratulations, Bernadette!

This isn't just an award, it's a recognition of the contribution of one of our own to the whole of English-speaking Christianity. The ecumenical dimension makes it very special. Well done, Bernadette!

Re: Unity with Liturgical Diversity

On the curious side, there was much bowing and scraping and busy-ness with the hands. Happily Mass was celebrated facing the people. This is very typical of many Ordinariate celebrations. They seem to love all the "manual acts", some of which come from the Tridentine Rite, others from Anglican trad...

Re: Director of Music, St George's Cathedral Southwark

Norman Harper is to retire at the end of the year and St George's are advertising for a new Director of Music. Here is a link to the advert: http://www.stgeorgescathedral.org.uk/music/directorofmusic.html I'm no expert but the remuneration seems very low for the type of musician they seem to want t...

Re: Easter Sunday morning Masses

Church near me is starting its Easter Vigil Mass (sic) at 7:00pm. Even if the clocks hadn't gone forward a week before, that would still be in daylight. Sunset is 7:35, so I guess he is thinking that it will be dark by the time they finish.

Re: SSG Communications - what the heck is going on?

... The idea that the Council Fathers were betrayed by excessive implementation of reforms they had not asked for is untenable: it was the same bishops who asked for them who had been at the Council. The question is not whether the same bishops were asked: it is whether all the bishops were asked b...

Re: SSG Communications - what the heck is going on?

...Documentary evidence for all this will be found in Piero Marini's splendid book A Challenging Reform ... The trouble with that, and Bugnini's book, is that they are accounts by the people involved. The people who are satisfied with the new mass tend to look on them as if they were audit reports ...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

Paul's new collection, The Collegeville Psalter, is available from Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0814646166/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Its a whopping £28.61, so I will wait until it hits the charity shop shelves. Is the US lectionary still out of step on the psalm words fr...

Re: Responsorial Psalm

What do people do these days for the Responsorial Psalm in a Sunday Mass? I have just started a new post as organist/choirmaster in a parish church where they have sung the psalm to an Anglican chant since time immemorial. Before that I have been a regular worshipper in my local church where the ps...

Re: SSG Communications - what the heck is going on?

Didn't Bugnini get himself slung out? Or was that a different Bugnini? Yes, that's him. The traditionalist elements in the Roman Curia saw him as the figurehead for the reforms that they hated, so they plotted against him, and he was exiled to be Apostolic Nuncio in Tehran, where he died, some say ...

Re: SSG Communications - what the heck is going on?

nazard refers to things that Vatican II did not mandate. He or she is not alone in that view. I would make two points: Firstly, Vatican II was not the end of the story. The Church is a iiving, dynamic organism. Anyone who thinks that we can say "OK, we did all the post-VII reforms. Now let's just s...

Re: SSG Communications - what the heck is going on?

And the problem with Traditionalist would be? I'm sure you know that many of these websites are intent upon undoing what Vatican II brought about, can be vitriolic about those whom they brand as "not real Catholics" (i.e. us), and frequently express defiance if not outright hatred of Pope Francis. ...

Re: SSG Communications - what the heck is going on?

Thank you, MaryR , for this response. I would be the first to acknowledge the massive amount of behind-the-scenes voluntary work that goes into putting on SSG events. I'm sure everyone appreciates that very much! And I'm very sorry to hear about the problems in rearranging some of the Spring Gatheri...

SSG Communications - what the heck is going on?

A brief look at the SSG website shows up some things which clearly need attention. First of all, perhaps a simple oversight, but there seems to be no mention of the 2018 Spring Gatherings. You can find details of the 2017 Gatherings, but not this year's. And yet I assume they are starting very soon ...
