Crichton Memorial Lecture

The Society of Saint Gregory honours the memory of Monsignor James Crichton with an annual lecture in his name. This is to fulfil his final wish that the Society should continue in its efforts to teach and educate.

The Lecture takes place at the Annual Assembly and is open to members and non-members alike.

 

Previous Lectures

2022

This year’s lecture was given on 8 October 2022 by Cardinal Arthur Roche, entitled ‘Interpreted by Love: Liturgical Formation and Participation in the light of Desiderio Desideravi’, and delivered via Zoom. The lecture was printed in Music and Liturgy, vol 49, no 1 (February 2023).

2021

This, the 20th Annual Crichton Lecture, was given by Fr Paul Turner, Pastor of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas city, Missouri and Director of the Office of Divine Worship of the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St Joseph, entitled ‘The Institution of Minister’, and delivered via Zoom. The lecture was printed in Music and Liturgy, vol 48, no 1 (January 2022).

2020

This was given on 10 October 2020 by Fleur Dorrell, Co-ordinator of ‘The God Who Speaks’ initiative, entitled ‘Sensing the Sacred – and where to find it’, and delivered via Zoom.

2019

This was given at English Martyrs RC Church, York on 5 October 2019 by our Chairman, Monsignor Kevin McGinnell, entitled ‘Quo Vadis? Unfinished Work’. The lecture was printed in Music and Liturgy, vol 46, no 1 (February 2020).

2018

This was given at St George’s RC Church, Worcester on 13 October 2018 by Fr Paul Gunter OSB, Secretary of the Department for Christian Life and Worship, entitled ‘Foundations of 20th Century Liturgical Reform and Future Perspectives’. The lecture was printed in Music and Liturgy, vol 45, no 1 (June 2019).

2017

This was given at St Aloysius, Somers Town, Euston on 14 October 2017 by the Reverend Lucy Winkett, Rector of St James’s Church, Piccadilly.  Continuing our Summer School theme of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the Annual Crichton Memorial Lecture had an ecumenical theme.

2016

This was given at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on 15 October 2016 by Archbishop Patrick Kelly, Archbishop Emeritus of Liverpool, entitled ‘Presiding, formed, challenged, and enriched in Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King’. The lecture was printed in Music and Liturgy, vol 42, no 3 (January 2017).

2015

This was given at St Dominic Barberi Church in Littlemore, Oxford on 7 November 2015 by Professor Thomas O’Loughlin of Nottingham University, entitled ‘Language, Music, Liturgy – communicating the Word’. The lecture was printed in Music and Liturgy, vol 41, no 3 (February 2016).

2014

This was given at All Souls Church, Coventry, on 15 November 2014 at 2.30 pm by Revd Dr Andrew Cameron-Mowat. His theme was’Liturgy in the Era of a Jesuit Pope’. The paper was printed in Music and Liturgy, vol 40, no 3 (February 2015).

2013

This was given at the Church of Our Lady, St John’s Wood, London on 9 November 2013 by Bishop Kieran Conry, Bishop of Arundel and Brighton. A re-developed version of his lecture, entitled ‘The Synod on the ‘New Evangelisation’, Rome, October 2012′ is available in Music and Liturgy, vol 39 no 3/4 (February 2014).
