What is the point of the Roman Catholic Church (2)

Well it does to the people who post here... dispassionate and reasoned debate, with a good deal of humour thrown in for good measure.

What is the point of the Roman Catholic Church (2)

Postby johnquinn39 » Thu Aug 16, 2012 8:16 am

Okay, what is the point?

The Roman Catholic 'church' is now three old ladies and a tin of sardines singing 'Daily daily, sing to Mary' at communion on Sunday (no disrepect to the BVM intended).

The acclamation 'Christ is risen' has now, rather unsurprisingly, been banned by Rome.

Were we baptised to learn latin, worship altar rails, and call women 'men'?

What is the point of these gay vicars with silly hats?

Do you have any evidence that people actually worship the altar rails, or any other fixtures and fittings?

Or that sardines are regular church-goers?

Indeed. I think we should be told. But such questions call for a better brain than mine.

I, too, am fascinated by the sardines. Presumably, John is envisaging a very small church, with barely room for three small female persons of diminutive stature, packed in like the proverbial sardines.

Or something.

Or, as Alan Bennett's vicar puts it: "“Life is rather like a tin of sardines – we're all of us looking for the key.”

Perhaps going a little off-topic, but:

What is the point of the 'new translation'?

It does not make sense, it is archaic, non-inclusive, and latinate.

[moderated for gratuitous hyperbole - Musicus]

So why force this on the People of God?

As you yourself say, John, this is off-topic.

Stick with the topic everyone, please...

Aha aha I know the answer ( hand up, getting over excited yet again)

"Many people do not realise that the 'normal' language for Roman Catholic worship is in fact Latin - the second Vatican Council didn't decree that in future Mass was to be said in the vernacular, rather it opened up the opportunity for the use of the vernacular, particularly in the administration of the sacraments. The unfortunate wholesale abandonment of the use of Latin in worship also has negative consequences for the 'treasury of sacred music' which is largely in Latin." (non attributed quote)

The Catholic church is the church for "normal" worship ie Latin Worship. I'm off to tell Father this and to open the "treasury of sacred music". Left it in the organ loft somewhere. Might have fallen into the foot pedals................
.................. oh no! I think I might not be normal.
uh oh!
