Grace as From a Fountain — Eucharist
During the 2003 SSG Summer School, Grace as From a Fountain, each of the three main talks focused on one of the Sacraments of Initiation. In this issue, Fr Allen Morris’s talk on Eucharist is reprinted. (The talks on Baptism and Confirmation were reprinted in earlier issues.) Since the Summer School was a celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the promulgation of Vatican II’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Fr Morris compares the liturgy we currently celebrate with that envisaged by the Council. He offers quite a challenge!

Back to the Future Part 1
An Interview with Joseph Gelineau, SJ

Fr Gelineau was interviewed in French by Paul Inwood on 3–4 July 2003 at Fr Gelineau’s home in Vallorcine, Haute-Savoie, a few miles from the Swiss border. The text was transcribed, translated and edited by the interviewer. This interview was jointly sponsored by the Society of Saint Gregory and Oregon Catholic Press.

In this first part of the interview, which also appears in the book Voices from the Council (OCP), Fr Gelineau discusses the liturgical changes wrought by the Second Vatican Council.

Gregory the Great —
Past Legend and present Inspiration

The 75th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Saint Gregory is also the 1400th anniversary of the death of St Gregory the Great. Having, in his fist article, traced the history of Gregorian chant distinguishing myth from reality, in this second article, Dom Dunstan O’Keeffe uses this historical study to asses the purpose of chant for us today. He suggests that the chant can be a discipline of inner preparation for the study of Scripture.

Sound Reflections
In his regular column on liturgical music, Paul Inwood discusses the problems and possibilities which flow from the requirement of Liturgiam authenticam that bishops’ conferences draw up a list of ’approved’ music for use in the liturgy.

Letter From Western Australia
Angela McCarthy continues the occasional series reflecting on liturgy in different parts of the world, sharing how the state of Western Australia rises to meet the particular needs of its people. The state is 2.5 million square kilometres, with a capital city (Perth) which is one of the most isolated in the world. The experience in Western Australia is one of energetic response to the call from Vatican II, with excellent liturgical education helping to improve the parish experience.

Grace as From a Fountain — Final Talk
This is the text of the brief talk Fr Allen Morris gave at the conclusion of the 2003 SSG Summer School, Grace as From a Fountain. He sets several challenges: How can one make the liturgy incarnate? What will you take away with you? And how will you share this with others?

The Archive Section

In celebration of the Society’s 75th anniversary, this section of Music and Liturgy looks back over the past three-quarters of a century. The Editors have selected articles from each twenty-five years of the Society’s journal. Readers will note how much things have moved on — and yet how many of the same matters are still issues today.

1 The New Encyclical on the Sacred Liturgy
This article was first published in April 1948 in the Society’s journal, (then called Liturgy). In it, Mgr Crichton discusses the text of Mediator Dei, an encyclical of Pope Pius XII, published in November 1947.

2 At the Time of the Council Three items have been chosen to represent the Society’s journal at the time of Vatican II. The first two items are from the October 1964 issue of the Society’s journal (at that time called Liturgy). The second item gives us an insight on the profound effect of the Council on the Society. The third (from January 1965) comments on the first Instruction on the Proper Implementation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.

3 The Missal of Paul VI - valuable, durable, questionable
This article by Joseph Gelineau, SJ, appeared in Music and Liturgy in 1993 (Volume 19 Number 4). It first appeared in Pastoral Music, Volume 17 Number 1 (October-November 1992), the journal of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, and is reproduced again by kind permission of the Editor.

Obituaries
Archbishop Denis Hurley, OMI (1915-2004)
Fr Brendan Callaghan SJ has written this obituary of one of the leading lights of the South African Church and of liturgy in the English Speaking world.
Marie Lamigeon (1912-2004)
An obituary of one of the oldest and longest-standing members of the Society, written by Paul Inwood.
