New Translation of the Roman Missal

8th May 2010

On 30th April Bishop Arthur Roche, chairman of ICEL issued a press release saying that the Congregation for Divine Worship had approved the definitive English text of the third edition of the Roman Missal, commonly known as the 'New Translation'. "This news ushers in the final phase of preparation for the publication and implementation of the Missal" he said.

Once it has been received from Rome, ICEL will transmit the text to the Bishops' conferences which are members of ICEL who may then make it available for publication. The date on which we will change from praying the current translation to the new one at Mass has yet to be decided, however it has been reported that the Masses of the Papal visit in September may use this text.

ICEL has produced resources to assist the catechetical process which will accompany the reception of the new text.

Bishop Roche will be giving one of the keynote addresses at the Society's Summer School in August this year. There will be some exploration of the new translation during the school.

24th January 2010

Following their November 2009  meeting, the bishops of England and Wales announced that they have completed their approval of the new translation of the Roman Missal.

The complete text is submitted to the Holy See for recognitio and it is hoped that the Missal will be published during the course of the next 18 months.

Bishop Arthur Roche, Chairman of the Department for Christian Life and Worship said:

"It will be important that the new translation is introduced well. The bishops are working on a programme for implementation which will be supported by catechetical resources and other materials for use in parishes."

There will be some exploration of issues raised by the new translation at this year's Summer School in August

The Society of Saint Gregory will bring you all the latest updates, news of the new translation and catechetical resources as soon as they are available. Check back here often.
